The Story of the Cloth...

If you were to be out and about in my neighbourhood at 6.30 each morning you would have seen a sweet elderly couple doing their "daily thing".

He would ride slowly on a bike and she would walk beside him......they took the same route  at the same time.....
that was until a few weeks ago.

Their house went up for sale and then the removalists came......

We wondered where they were moving to and what  the reason for the move was, a home that clearly had been theirs for some time.....

Then this week there has been a garage sale held in their driveway for the last two days....

Today I had some time to wander over and see what was on offer.......

Four elderly people welcomed me and were keen for me to find something of interest.

I exchanged some friendly banter about the weather and realised that neither of the gentlemen there was in fact our bike riding neighbour neither did I recognise the women who were pottering around.

I spotted this lovely tablecloth down low and reached  to admire it......

"Are you nearly done with your move?" I inquired......

"Oh this all belongs to our sister and her husband... we are family trying to help out."

The old guy has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and they have had to move suddenly to be with family.....

As our conversation went on I gained the knowledge that these four friends and family were clearly overwhelmed at how to move a houseful of worldly possessions.
I could tell from the tables of goods, that the bike riding man and his wife were of Italian origin...the intricate vases and garden ornaments gave it away....

I could also tell that what remained here were once treasured and prized belongings to a couple that had not had the chance to work through all of this with any time.......

It was then that I found myself encouraging these people to preserve and find a good home for these treasures, tings that have held a lot of meaning for someone.....

"It's too hard maybe we should just get a skip and put it all in"

GASP!!!!!  NO, there must be a way to find a new home for these things....

I left them with my name address, phone number and a promise to give them any assistance they may need to place these things in good hands.....a charity or something similar.
They were clearly surprised and said they would call....

I'll let you know if they do.

I also bought a beautiful cloth

I am loving the opportunity to engage with random people in my neighbourhood

and to purchase my own little piece of someone elses treasures.

Check out other lovely things here

I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something you can be thankful for..no matter how simple it is.

  3. Aw... what a sad situation they find themselves in. You are such a kind person to offer your help... I guess the nature of the poor man's situation has a special understanding in my heart and I pray that his family will take time to gather around them.

What a lovely piece you found, it looks like some one hand made this piece. I love anything hand made because you know that it is made with love and happiness in someones heart!

  7. Hey Bron how sad to hear of this couples misfortune.....
Even harder that they have had to moved suddenly and not have the chance to sift through a life time of memories and take time to process everything. At least they have family to move closer too, that's a positive.
Good on you Bron for offering to help out. Some times things can just overwhelm us, but when there are people offering help it certainly makes the load alot lighter.
